What does this mean for me?
Beginning on October 1, 2024, the sale of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) in New Jersey are subject to tax. Any tax exemption will be phased out over a period of nine months, beginning with a sales tax rate of 3.3125% on October 1st, 2024.
How does/did the NJ ZEV sales tax exemption work?
The New Jersey Sales and Use Tax Act provides a sales and use tax exemption for zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), which are vehicles certified pursuant to the California Air Resources Board zero emission standards for the model year. The exemption is not applicable to partial zero emission vehicles, only zero emission vehicles. The 2024 Honda Prologue qualifies as a zero emissions vehicle.
The definition of sale in the law includes leases. Thus, the exemption is applicable to the sale, lease or finance of a new zero emissions motor vehicle between May 1, 2004 and September 30, 2024.
