Lester Glenn Honda Guide to Electrified Driving
We’re reminded of the monetary and environmental costs of driving every day, from high gas prices to rising temperatures and shore erosion. It’s no wonder that a growing number of drivers are turning to electrified vehicles, including Honda hybrid and EV models. Lester Glenn Honda explains their differences, benefits, and some other useful facts to help you make an informed choice.
Types of Electrified Vehicles
Electrification isn’t all or nothing. There are different degrees, each with different pros and cons.
Hybrids
Hybrid powertrains combine an electric motor and battery with a conventional combustion engine. Honda hybrid models like the Honda Accord Hybrid give owners the efficiency of an electric motor while still having the range of an internal combustion engine. The all-electric range is limited, but it’s sufficient to improve fuel economy.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)
A PHEV or plug-in hybrid uses a larger battery pack, so it can drive longer distances on electric power. Like a conventional hybrid, it can recapture energy through regenerative braking. It’s also capable of external charging, even if it can’t match an EV’s all-electric range.
Electric Vehicle (EV)
EVs completely forego internal combustion engines, relying instead on much larger battery packs running electric motors. A vehicle like the 2024 Honda Prologue eliminates emissions, lowers maintenance costs, and still gives you performance comparable to (or in some cases better than) a traditional gas-powered vehicle.
Charging Your Electrified Vehicle
Thanks to their regenerative braking systems, hybrids recharge as they go. PHEVs and EVs can both use 120-volt Level 1 or 240-volt Level 2 charging systems. The fastest charging, called Level 3 DC Fast Charging, is mostly limited to electric vehicles; few PHEVs are capable of using these chargers.
